Hanne Rivrud was born in Oslo, Norway in 1982. She was a student of fine arts from 1998 to 2006 and graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo.

A significant part of Rivruds work is based on video material of people in everyday life situations who are unaware of her filming them. By adding voice-over, text or music to this video material, Rivrud attempts to create new narratives and fiction.
